Keys locked in the car: from the click of the door to the drive away

A car lockout goes in stages, and each stage has one or two things worth doing. Here's the order that works in Myrtle Beach, whether you're at a golf course, a condo deck or a lot off the boulevard.

Ready when the technician arrives

The visit goes quickest when these are in hand before the technician pulls up.

If one of them is locked in the car with the keys, just say so on the call.

Wait in the shade near the car, with your phone on.

Right after the door locks

Go around the car and try each handle, including the tailgate, since one door may not have caught the lock command. Pat down pockets, look through bags, glance at the roof. If a child or a pet is inside, stop here and call 911, especially in the summer heat. If the car is keyless and still running, keep everyone with a second fob away from it so it doesn't get more confused.

Before you call anyone

Think about where the spare is. If someone staying nearby has it, a short drive from them may be the quickest fix of all. If the spare is several states away, or there isn't one, it's time to call. Know what you're driving and exactly where it sits: the course lot, the deck level, the nearest cross street off the boulevard.

On the phone

Say where the car is, whether the keys are inside it or missing entirely, and whether it's a rental. Give the make, the model and the model year. You'll hear a realistic window and a free estimate before anyone heads your way. If the car is inside a gated community, pass along the gate code.

The wait

Stay near the car, somewhere shaded, and keep your phone on so the technician can call when close. Pull up the registration or the rental agreement on your phone if you can. If your license is on the front seat with the keys, mention it; it's looked at as soon as the door opens.

When the technician arrives

Paperwork first, then the car is opened. How that's done is left to the technician, who's trained for it, and you'll see it done. Before they leave, try the locks, the fob and the ignition yourself so you drive off knowing everything works. If the car has a keyless entry pad or a remote start, give those a try too.

If the keys are lost, not locked in

Keys dropped on the beach, on the course or in a crowd rarely come back. Once the car is open, a replacement key or fob is cut and programmed on the spot for most makes, and the missing one can be removed from the car's system so it no longer starts it. Tell us on the call that the keys are gone so the right equipment comes along the first time.

Golf days

A lot of lockouts here start the same way: keys in the golf bag, bag in the trunk, trunk shut. On many cars there's no way into the trunk except through the car, so it's handled like any other lockout. If your group is waiting on one car for a tee time, tell the pro shop; they've seen it before.

Car lockout questions

My keys are in my golf bag, and the bag is in the trunk.

That's handled like a normal lockout on most cars. Say so on the call, along with what you drive.

The rental is in my friend's name. Can you open it?

The person named on the rental agreement needs to be there with ID.

It's hot and my dog is in the car.

Call 911 first, then us. Emergency crews respond to animals in hot cars.

Can you open a car on a condo parking deck?

Yes. Give the level and the space, and the gate code if there is one.

Will the technician call before arriving?

Yes, so keep your phone on and stay near the car.

Can I leave the car and come back to it?

Yes. Tell us when you'll be back beside it, and bring the ID and paperwork with you.

I lost my keys on the course. Can a new one be made right there?

On most makes, yes, where the car is parked.

Do I hear what it involves before anything happens?

Yes. The estimate is free and comes before any work.
