Key fob not working? What's usually behind it

A fob that seems dead is often fine, especially on a car that's been sitting while its owners were away. Here's the order things are checked in at the visit, what a replacement involves in Myrtle Beach, and why one fob per car is a gamble.

Back after months away?

Cars that sit for a season often come back with a flat battery, and a flat car battery makes every fob look broken.

The technician checks these three in order before suggesting a new fob.

After a car has sat for months

Snowbirds and second-home owners often come back to a car that won't respond to anything. Before blaming the fob, consider the car: a battery that drained over the season can leave the car deaf to every fob you own. Mention how long the car sat when you call. The technician checks the car's power first, then the fob and its programming, so only what's actually wrong gets fixed.

The fob's own battery

Shrinking range is the classic sign: the fob unlocks the car from beside the door but not from across the lot, or it takes three or four presses. Fobs left in a drawer all season drain too. At the visit, that cell is tested first, and if it's the only problem, it's replaced on the spot and the fob checked before anything worse is considered.

One fob is a gamble

Many households run a car on a single fob, especially when only one person drives it. Lose that fob on the course or the beach and the car stays put until a replacement is made. A second fob, set up during the same visit, adds little time and ends the gamble. Keep it at home, in a drawer you'll remember, not in the glove box.

When a fob is gone for good

The replacement is programmed to the car right where it's parked, whether that's a driveway, a condo lot or a clubhouse. On most makes, the missing fob is deleted from the car's list of known fobs during the same visit. If it was dropped somewhere busy, that step matters: whoever picks it up holds nothing that works.

Cracked cases and worn buttons

Fobs get dropped on pavement and tossed into golf bags with everything else. A cracked case or buttons worn smooth don't always mean a new fob: a replacement shell can often hold the original circuit board, so the car sees the same fob it always did. Ask about a shell before replacing a fob that only looks tired.

Fobs from online sellers

Buying a fob online is a coin toss. Some are exactly right; others transmit on the wrong band, carry the wrong chip, or were used before and stay tied to someone else's car. Bring it and the technician will try it first, before any programming, so a dud is caught before it wastes anyone's time. Better still, ask on the call before ordering.

Getting ready for the visit

Photo ID, the registration, and every fob you have, even the one that half works. Cars with plates from up north or from Canada are no problem. Say what you drive and the model year when you call; you get a free estimate before anything is programmed.

Key fob questions

My car sat all summer and the fob does nothing.

A drained car battery is the usual cause, since it keeps the car from hearing any fob. The car's power is checked before the fob.

I only have one fob. Should I get another?

Yes. A second fob set up at the same visit keeps one lost fob from stranding the car.

Can you program a fob for a car registered up north?

Yes. Your ID and the registration matter, not where the plates are from.

Could someone use the fob I lost?

Not after the visit, on most makes: the missing fob is deleted from the car's list when the new one is set up.

My fob's case is cracked. Does the whole fob need replacing?

Often not. A new shell can usually hold the original circuit board.

Should I buy a fob online before you come?

Ask on the call first. Many online fobs can't be programmed to your car.

When do I hear what it will involve?

On the call, as a free estimate, and again at the car before anything is programmed.
